Shake It Off- '24 Week 3 X League Area Report

No blowouts in Week Three Area!
In a six game season, which is what the X League Super and Area teams play, every game counts, literally. For all it takes is one or two bad plays, or as what was seen in Dentsu's game against the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, poor officiating (in this writer's opinion), for a season to change. Six games means that time, possessions and opportunities cannot be either squandered or lost.

Such it was during week three Area play in which the games were, by X League standards, relatively close. There were no blowouts, like we always see in the Super, and the margin of victory for the Area games meant that the matches for the most part (at least as seen on paper, as none of the games were televised), remained close until the fourth quarter. With that said, none of the games repeated the aerial assault we saw in Week 2 by the Dentsu Caterpillars.

Tainai Deers 14 PentaOcean Pirates 7

Box Score

Deers quarterback duo of Shotaro Owada and Ryosuke Nishizawa were a disappointing combined 8/24, with one touchdown pass (by Owada) to Shota Inoue. The Deers had a total of 139 rushing yards, led by Kensuke Tagashira's 16 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown. The defense recorded one sack and interception as they stifled the Pirates offense, allowing them only 56 passing yards and 25 rushing yards, with their lone touchdown coming on a run by Kento Shibata.

Mitsubishi Club Triax 19 Bulls F.C. 6

Box Score

Triax kicker, Hikaru Kasai, led all scorers as he kicked four field goals and one PAT, which was complemented by a touchdown run by Daisuke Yamanaka, Triax quarterback, Yosuke Yamagiwa was 11/20 and 99 yards, while the team had a combined 157 yards in rushing. The defense recorded one interception by Takumi Shichijo, as they held the Bulls to a total of 101 passing yards and 55 yards rushing.  The Bulls' lone score came on a pass from Ae Yasutomo to Kato Shota.

Shinagawa BullsEyes 17 Blue Thunders 12

Box Score

When your quarterback goes 5/15 and 25 yards passing, one would think your box score will show a loss. Not so for the BullsEyes as their running game led the way with 89 yards on the ground and one touchdown by Yuito Ikeda. The kicking game pitched in with a field goal by Shuuha Fukui. On the defensive side a fumble recovery by Yuuta Sumiya led to the team's other touchdown, with the squad also contributing with a bend but don't break mentality in picking off a Dymond Lee once and sacking him twice. Lee was 19/32, 227 yards, with one touchdown pass to Nobutake Yamada, and also ran for 46 yards and the Blue Thunders first touchdown of the game. The other notable statistic for the Blue Thunders was Kudo Masaaki's 89 yards receiving. No PATS were converted by the Blue Thunders after each touchdown.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police Eagles 14 Dentsu Caterpillars

Box Score

The Eagles had a total of 92 combined yards of passing and 121 rushing yards in a low scoring game led by a quarterback committee that recorded six completions on 14 attempts and one touchdown pass, by Shinnobu Saito to Riku Kuwahara.  Aoi Ito ran for one touchdown and 60 yards, while the Eagles defense intercepted two Dentsu passes.  For the Caterpillars, Aaron Ellis was 18/32 for 177 yards, and a touchdown pass to Satoshi Onuki. Kicker Takahiro kicked a field goal, but missed the PAT in the 4th quarter. Aaron's favorite target, Ravon Johnson, caught three passes for 50 yards, while the ground game was 54 yards on the day.

As One Black Eagles 27 Nagoya Cyclones 10

Box Score

The Black Eagles also recorded one sack and one interception (by Kitada Daiki).
