The Gridiron Game in Japan, a Football Odyssey

"American Football in Japan may sound like a novelty, but in reality, the gridiron game has been played in the Land of the Rising Sun since the 1930s. Against the backdrop of World War II, and through many international games against American opponents, the sport developed and created a niche following for itself, entering another chapter in The Football Odyssey." `~ Aron Harris of The Football Odyssey podcast

One of the pleasures of this passion we call "gridiron football" is getting to know those who share the same passion. For me I have been blessed in getting to know Zach Keilman, John Gunning, Aaron Ellis and B.J. Beatty, all of whom are key important players on the Gridiron Japan team. I have learned much these past few years from my friends on the podcast, all of whom embody what it means to be true fans. The other important players are of course our listeners and guests, be they in Japan or anywhere else in the world. Without all of you, we would not be able to continue.

In what I hope will be a regular feature here at Gridiron Japan News Hub, which now that I am retired from my full time career and have the time to pursue a sports writing career (I have always wanted to be a Frank Deford or Grantland Rice type of sports writer), I would like to spotlight those on the field, in the press box, in the stands, etc., who contribute to and have a passion for the Japanese gridiron game. There are many, and over the next many years, as I settle in to my new life in Japan (happening very soon), that is my goal and purpose. Hopefully I can channel my inner Steve Sabol in a written voice that would make John Facenda proud.

One of Gridiron Japan's biggest fans is Aron Harris, of The Football Odyssey. Aron is a young man who has true passion for the history of the game we love, and not just in North America, but everywhere people, be they young or old, toss the pigskin around.  Aron, is a member of The Sports History Network where wonderful history theme podcasts have found a loving and caring home. Aron's podcast is one that looks at the sport of football from a historian's perspective, but dives even deeper with a look at the meaning of the game from the standpoint of popular culture, literary and film review and criticism. His shows are worthy of airplay on National Public Radio, and hopefully someday that big break will come for him! So please give him and the other great folks at the Sports History Network a follow and listen. No matter your interest you will find a show to interest you there.

Now with all that said, the idea to do a regular English podcast on American football in Japan came from my chats with John Gunning and Zach Keilman, with the original seed planted in my mind during the pandemic, when, as I was scrolling through the proverbial podcast dial during the pandemic I stumbled upon Aron's review of the history of American football in Japan. I was utterly captivated, and Aron has graciously allowed us here to repost his episode from 2020, which is originally based on his prior well-researched written essays on the history of the American game in Japan.

Thank you again Aron, for helping to inspire. Your passion for the history of the game and support of Gridiron Japan is very much appreciated! Thank you! ~ Greg
